In lieu of old tires or treated wood, I'm trying out old rotten firewood and twigs as building material for our potato box. The potatoes seem to be okay with their rustic accommodations. Every week as they grow, I add another level and a layer of compost. Hopefully it will reach three feet before harvest. We'll see if any potatoes roll out when we knock it over in a couple of months. I only used one potato cut in quarters, so it wouldn't take much to break even.a.tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09333541687633609329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005383470821700031.post-51139690551455414502011-12-01T08:57:00.000-08:002011-12-01T20:36:26.275-08:00Beware the Eggs of March<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg01UkRKjFcDR62Ksaf2e1mS7dAWT__xOMRSM3SAL0uJEmWH8Osy8HawSB0MNLoiVtuaIFb3Rr6UvD59uWno7ixvM8ASm5jB3wKAgNdqOw6rGfQP1FdN2XAw9T3uA62K9SELGTYz_ikRCSV/s400/egg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5681205738988408466" />

After 20 years of fairly strict veganism, I have decided to include (local, small farm, humanely produced) eggs in my diet starting this Spring. The plan is to maintain 99-95% vegan, so it’s not a big deal to most people, I know. But after making many of you deal with 20 years that went from curiosity to militancy to self-righteous indignation to stoic smugness to reflection to stubbornness to reflection to humbleness to reflection… I thought I owed you this note. So in keeping with my lazy environmentalism, I’ve decided to become a lazy vegan, AKA a vegetarian.

If anyone is interested (or knows anyone who might be interested) in doing an exit interview/examination for research purposes on a long-term strict vegan, please get in touch before March 15, 2012.

Okay, you may now commence with the egg jokes. Please keep them brief and G-rated. Press conference adjourned.

AT Crawleya.tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09333541687633609329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005383470821700031.post-59405369650105637292011-10-29T19:45:00.000-07:002011-10-29T20:45:05.358-07:005712 Vegetable Garden

The vegetable garden this spring and summer wasn't much to look at (wasn't much at which to look?)... We did, however, get a whole mess of string beans from vines around 20 feet long. More chard than we could eat, a substantial haul of carrots, some tiny broccoli florets on thick, tall stalks, enough butternut squash to share from the compost heap (and some nice compost) and a lot of fennel, basil, oregano and parsley. We got one sweet potato, a few onions the width of my thumb, and a handful of spinach.

Check out the squash mould I made using one of our drinking glasses. The design is really simple, but it will be much easier to wield on the hillside than the original wooden tripod. Depending on how it performs I may add a third support in back for stability. A 1/4" 20 thread eye bolt and some vinyl pads hold the camera in place. The setup cost under 10 bucks.a.tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09333541687633609329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005383470821700031.post-43713695531496699912010-02-07T20:58:00.000-08:002010-02-07T21:20:12.841-08:00Scion
A funny thing happened while I was searching for some freeware that would help me manage all the duplicate personal photos on my hard drive... I managed to go off on a tangent, searching for "public domain image analysis algorithms". ScienceDirect directed me to some very helpful articles, one of which mentioned a company called Scion. The good folks at scion.com have available a program called Scion Image. it is used for analyzing medical and other images for research. At the very least it counts pixels, which will provide an interesting comparison to the SamplePoint method of quantifying plant growth. The manual is 107 pages. Once I get through that, maybe I'll be able to batch process the files and export the info directly into a database. We'll see.a.tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09333541687633609329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005383470821700031.post-68824762470127106752010-01-22T20:38:00.001-08:002010-01-22T21:36:16.355-08:00Winter hikingThis is an article published in today's Washington Post about a trip Stephanie and I took to Harper's Ferry earlier this month:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/21/AR2010012101364.htmla.tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09333541687633609329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005383470821700031.post-43180188023345015672009-12-21T08:25:00.000-08:002009-12-21T08:31:12.369-08:00Cindy Conner's Cover Crop Video

This is a teaser for Cindy Conner and her son Luke's first instructional video. Using tools in the ArcMap software, it is possible to select out only pixels that meet the criteria RGB values <= 0.105 which returns the actual number of pixels. Now it is possible to calculate green vs non-green vegetation, soil, etc.

I am trying to figure out a bare bones way of doing this that can be used as a Photoshop macro. Above are some photos from earlier this fall.a.tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09333541687633609329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005383470821700031.post-55459427107748040912009-11-19T10:27:00.000-08:002009-11-19T10:34:03.512-08:00Asparagus' Aspirations of Greatness or A-ga-ve Whoa oh!<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjes66q1ML9K6xIahK0BPV8b9Bsfp0jm4myVsqD16zSGFP5Ie1gPyyvxakiblM3ZcI9zKxvH9SlJ56boqDexhsvSdcZBrIcB7PdksTBppVuWrfAq50mKj7ovpOtonmhxmrMnkH16I802a-V/s320/IMG_1668.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405884711718070290" />
Stephanie and I ran into this thing in Oaxaca last month.a.tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09333541687633609329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005383470821700031.post-62143826748850186572009-11-19T06:17:00.001-08:002017-01-01T10:09:43.387-08:00Flashback to Fuchu
I've been trying to determine the exact moment I starting taking a renewed interest in plants and their cultivation. My folks kept a big garden with a section for me. My ma kept a lot of houseplants and her parents still had a farm we visited throughout my childhood. Despite all this it wasn't until my late 20s in Japan that I really got into it. These photos show one experience I really enjoyed outside of Fuchucho in Hiroshima prefecture at Kouji Uenishi's family farm planting rice one weekend. My skills were not so strong and his kids were leaving me in the dust... or in the muck.a.tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09333541687633609329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005383470821700031.post-74058299512930579212009-06-11T20:18:00.000-07:002009-06-11T20:32:38.800-07:00Maymont Spring Vegetable Garden<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRjVUIp1wq6VEGH-YzIXDVKgCFO06xG_AR5XYJtcj_2Tst1Pqzq8AfQdGshxlMLOaXX9546JkaOoUKQSPHm3GNw3EAsX5P2euHFZB1Q2NTYcjcIIkfRaM5QbxpJorzkJVG2bYe_0GtUhe3/s400/IMG_0459.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5346278066124508930" />
The garden turned out pretty good this season. Cindy Conner's garden plan served me well. Most everything was coordinated well enough that the beds were full and abundant at the same time. Only problem was the containers, I should've lined them with plastic. The terra cotta is constantly wicking moisture out of the soil and even after adding extra water, the leaves were still looking chloritic. Fearful of loosing the tomatoes, I added some synthetic fertilizer to the containers. On the upside, the container plants are now dark green, sturdy and beautiful. On the downside, they will not be permitted to compete in the next Olympic Games. All the other beds remain chemical free and no sprays are used, so that's good.a.tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09333541687633609329noreply@blogger.com1
